What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture originated in China where it still features in mainstream healthcare.  Acupuncture works to help maintain your body’s equilibrium. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of “qi” your body’s vital energy.

For a number of lifestyle reasons, qi can become disturbed, depleted or blocked, which can result in some symptoms of pain or illness or dis-ease.

More and more people are turning to acupuncture for solutions to their health and well being. Robust scientific research shows that acupuncture works.

How does Acupuncture Work?

Treatment is aimed at the root cause of your condition as well as your main symptoms. This approach helps with resolving your problem and enhancing your feeling of well being.

Can Acupuncture help me?

Acupuncture has traditionally being used to treat a wide range of health conditions:

Our approach to treatment is integrative combining TCM acupuncture with western medical knowledge.

What does it feel like?

Most peoples experience of needles is those of injections and blood tests. Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to these. They are extremely fine, so it is a pain free experience.

Is it safe?

Acupuncture is one of the safest medical treatments on offer in the UK. All members of the British Acupuncture Council  observe a strict code of practise which lay down standards of hygiene. Only disposable sterilised needles are used and then carefully discarded after treatment. It is an extremely safe form of medicine with no side effects. Acupuncture is shown to be one of the most popular complementary therapies. It is estimated that 3.14 million treatments are carried out in the UK every year. The world health organisation recognises Acupuncture to be effective in the treatment of several health conditions.

If you would like to find out more about specific conditions, please see the Research Fact Sheets. These provide summaries of research on a wide range of conditions and how acupuncture may be beneficial.

WHO recommends acupuncture as an effective treatment for back pain, headaches, depression and much more.
