The condition affects more than 1.1 million people in the UK, with 95% of patients suffering from problems affecting the lower back. Back pain currently costs the NHS and community care services more than £1 billion each year*. Most lower back pain is caused not by serious damage or disease, but by sprains, muscle strains, minor injuries, or a pinched or irritated nerve. It can also occur during pregnancy, or because of stress, viral infection or a kidney infection.
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines on best practice now recommend that GPs offer a course of 8 to10 sessions of acupuncture as a first line treatment for persistent, non-specific low back pain*
Acupuncture helps back pain by:
- – by stimulating nerves located in muscles and other tissues this leads to release of brain chemicals known as endorphins and changes the processing of pain in the brain and spinal cord .
- reduces inflammation,
- improves muscle stiffness and joint mobility – by increasing local microcirculation (Komori 2009), which aids dispersal of swelling and bruising.
- We have successfully treated several patients with lower back pain & sciatica.
Acupuncture is very effective in treating all back related problems including, stiff neck and shoulders, spasms, lower back ache, hip and sciatic pain:
MRI scans reveal that gentle stimulation of specific acupuncture points triggers the bodys own natural healing response by releasing hormones and natural painkillers. When stressed the body releases neuropeptide a fight or flight hormone into the blood, acupuncture is shown to significantly reduce levels of this protein, reduce pain and calm the nervous system.
Your treatment session will be tailored to meet your individual needs and will include: a thorough consultation with a full medical history and assessment of your condition and a treatment. Most people with acute sciatica see an improvement within 4 sessions.
We have successfully treated several patients with back pain.
